Hidden Security Cameras

By Ally Smith

Many install hidden security cameras in order to keep an eye over baby sitters, nannies, house keepers, and others who are hired to perform in home services. There are many people who cannot be in their home during the day because they work or go to school and need to know what is going on in their home and with their children.

There are for instance many documented cases where nannies or baby sitters have been recorded on video tape abusing the child or children he or she was hired to take care of. This led to serious charges against nannies caught in the act. This has prompted many parents to install cameras in their homes.

People want to know if their child is being abused by the person they are paying. The draw back however is that the camera will not necessarily prevent the abuse, it will only record the abuse if it happens. The child could still be traumatized by an abusive care giver, despite the presence of the video camera. The security system should not be a substitute for parents exercising due diligence in their selection of baby sitters or the hiring of a nanny.

Some parents like having a camera in the house because they can stay in touch with their child, at least via video. They are able to see the child at play, or asleep, or eating. For those who have to work full time and raise their children, it allows them some form of connection.

Many report a higher feeling of control when they have a video system in place. They say that they do not have to take the word of the nanny about what goes on with their child when they are away from home. They can see in the video that the baby sitter does properly care for their child. There are nannies who actually like having a camera in the home. This way if there is a question about their care, they have video evidence that they have acted in the best interest of the child.

The video camera is also an effective tool to monitor the house keeper who is supposed to be working and not sitting around watching television. The camera will reveal the house keeper is charges but does not work. The camera could pay for itself in these cases.

Cameras come in all shapes and sizes. They can be concealed in clocks, or fire alarms, or even books. There are pin hole cameras that can fit into the wall. These cameras can provide a full view of the room.

Prices vary depending on size and capability and of course ease of use. Most are easy to install. There is more of a demand for these systems today because of the growing concern in home security.

Before installing a surveillance system in the home, people would be wise to understand the legal issues involved. Most areas allow people to video tape someone in their home without their knowledge. But it is wise to know the law before installing a hidden camera in the home.
